History

Model Boats have been sailed on the Orakei Basin since 1936.

This is most likely the longest association of a sporting group related to the Orakei Basin.

As part of the original scout group building, were the Model Yacht Club rooms, now incorporated in the present Sea Scout building.

The ELECTRONS have been meeting and racing at the Orakei Basin now for 15 years, with the Orakei Yacht Club formed more recently to formalise the groups events, and to create a positive club position when it comes to the use of the Basin.

From modest beginnings, the OYC has a grown to a membership of regular Electroneers, meeting nearly every week at the Basin on Thursday and/or Sunday.

The fleet various from 8 to 12 boats on any club day ideal for Radio Controlled racing, while fleets closer to 20 boats turn out for Special events and Regattas.

Thursdays

OYC sails at the Orakei Basin every Thursday at 16:00 during the winter and 17:00 during the summer. There are few exceptions, such as Christmas.

Sundays

OYC sails most sundays during summer at 15:00 subject to weather and public holidays, and during winter alternate sundays in consideration of a fellow Electron club, Watchman Island Yacht Club.

Calendar

A race day calendar is available on the OYC website and members are kept updated by regular newsletters.
